The dethroning of Ludhiana District Congress Committee (DCC) president Pawan Dewan by the All India Congress Committee has put across a strong message for the dissidents, but at the same time, the appointment of Gurpreet Bassi Gogi, a local councillor, has invited criticism from various quarters.
Following reports of non-cooperation by Dewan ever since former MP of Ludhiana Manish Tewari withdrew his name from parliamentary elections, resentment against him in the party was constantly brewing.
On Sunday, a meeting was convened under senior Congress leaders, All India Congress Committee AICC secretary Harish Chaudhary and MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu with Ludhiana member of Parliament (M) Ravneet Singh Bittu to decide upon the name of the new DCC president and Gogi’s name was finalised.
Later, an appointment letter was handed to Gogi at his residence after the conclusion of the meeting around 7 pm.
A senior Congressman, while listing the names of former DCC Ludhiana presidents, said, “Dr Kali Charan, Dewan Jagdish Chander, Joginder Pal Pandey and Rakesh Pandey are some names who made us proud Congressmen, but now the criteria of selecting district Congress chief has changed, hence we have to compromise.”
KK Bawa, former Ludhiana DCC president, said the party should only elevate people who had spent decades serving the party and had proven to be true patriots at some point of time.
When contacted, MLA Rakesh Pandey said, “I only got an intimation for a regular meeting from the Punjab Congress Committee. I was unaware that a decision on the new DCC chief was to be taken at the meeting. There should be transparency about such matters.” Gogi to use technology to curb infighting.
