After reading the appeal for Rajwant Kaur, a survivor of acid attack, in Hindustan Times, many good samaritans stepped in to help the girl.
An NRI, who was in Ludhiana to visit his family, donated $1,000 to the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana society, for the Rajwant's surgeries. A native of village Jartauli, Ludhiana district, and now residing in Las Angeles, US, who wished not to be named, met Dr Vijay Obed, head plastic surgery department on Wednesday and donated the money.
"I was moved to know the sad incident. I was even more shocked to know that the person who attacked her with the acid seven years ago is moving free in the society on bail and was not punished yet," said the NRI.
"Now, my aim is to bring in more help for Rajwant. I will go back to US and talk to my friends over there to help her, so that she could get her surgeries done," he added.
General secretary of Brick Kiln Owner Association, who is the brother of NRI philanthropist, Sarabjeet Singh Dhillon said, "The step taken by my brother has motivated me too. I will hold a meeting with my association and will appeal to them to provide as much help as they can."
Not only the NRI, but a few city residents also donated for the cause. Bharat Gas distributors also donated `22,500 in the CMCH on Wednesday for Rajwant's surgeries.
Distributor of Resham Gas Service, Khanna, Franky Dhaliwal said, "We were nine distributors of the Bharat Gas in Ludhiana district, including Khanna, Dehlon, Amloh, and all decided to contribute some money to help out Rajwant Kaur."
"I want all my fellow distributors and other people to step forward, as it could help a girl gain her confidence back after the surgeries and it will be our little contribution towards making the society better," added Dhaliwal.
A youth attacked Rajwant Kaur with acid when she was returning home on April 1, 2007. She had suffered severe injuries on her face and upper parts of her body. Her right eye was completely damaged, while her left eye received severe injuries. She has undergone many surgeries in the CMCH till now and needs many more.
