The government land worth crores is being encroached by people with the backing of some influential leaders of the region in Jaitu. The land, located in Prem Nagar, is part of a village pond. As per revenue records, the land should be used to make a water body for cattle. However, it has been lying vacant for last several decades.

Encroachers have constructed structures and marked their boundary with a barbed wire. Whenever a section of people raises voice against the encroachment, the encroachers boast of their political patronage.

The encroachments reportedly began a decade ago when a leader of a political party started marking plots on the land. A religious structure was also constructed on the land. The administration took a strong stand and demolished the religious structure, but some religious organisations raised objections against the demolition of the structure and the administration stopped the drive.

Nearly four months ago, SDM Harjit Singh ordered to stop the construction of rooms on the land. However, only a few rooms were demolished and the rest of the rooms are used by drivers of commercial vehicles to stay and take rest.

Rajpal Singh, SDM, Kotkapura, said that he was not aware of the encroachment and steps will be taken to stop it.
