The state government and politicians forgot to remember Maharaja Ranjit Singh on his 234th birth anniversary on Thursday.

Last year, a state-level function was organised in Badrukhan village of the district, the home place of Ranjit Singh's mother Raj Kaur ('nanke pind' of the Mharaja).

This year, no function was not organised. However, finance minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa reached the village to pay obeisance in the gurdwara and lay the foundation stone of the under-construction park. All others remained away from the village.

When contacted, district public relations officer Subash Gupta said, "I cannot comment why the function was not organised, as these decisions are taken at the higher level."

The villagers said a state-level function was organised last year, but this year politicians could not bother to organize any function.

"The function was organised last year, because Lok Sabha elections were approaching, this time there are no elections in the near future, so why politicians should come here,", said Anil Kumar, a resident of
Badrukhan village.

Historian Krishan Betab said, "Being the 'nanke pind' of Maharaj Ranjit Singh, Badrukhan has historic
importance, we have seen several functions were organised in the village in the past."
