Punjab governor Kaptan Singh Solanki inaugurated a solar panel fencing project worth Rs 25 lakh at Van Chetna Park in Bassi Jana forest area on Thursday. The project was funded by Rajya Sabha member Avinash Rai Khanna from his MP Land Development Fund (MPLAD) on persistent demand from the people of the area, whose property was damaged by wild and stray animals.

The governor hoped that the project, the first of its kind in the state, would bring huge relief to the people.

Union minister of state for social security and empowerment Vijay Sampla and state forest and wildlife minister Chunni Lal
Bhagat were present on the occasion.

The governor attended two functions on water conservation at Border Security Force (BSF) training camp at Kharkan and at the Police Recruits Training Centre (PRTC), Jahan Khelan.

At the facility, he emphasised the importance of the need to put a check on the depleting ground water.

"It is the moral duty of every citizen to conserve water," he said, adding that intensive awareness campaigns were the need of the hour.

On the occasion, he awarded cadets of the two training centres who had participated in an essay-writing contest on the topic
of water conservation.

The governor and the union minister announced a grant of Rs 5 lakh each for a water recharging unit at the training centre.
