Govt schoolteacher 'thrashes' 7-yr-old for not reciting table

A Class-2 student, Balpreet Singh, received injuries on his arms and back after his class teacher allegedly caned him for not reciting a table at Government Primary School, Gobind Nagar, on Wednesday.

When the mother of the seven-year-old child visited the school to complain about the matter, the schoolteachers allegedly misbehaved with her. Eventually, the child's parents filed a complaint with the Ghumar Mandi police post.

According to Amandeep Kaur, Balpreet's mother, she came to know about the incident when she saw bruises on her son's arms and back while changing his clothes on Wednesday.

“Balpreet told me that his class teacher, Harvinder Kaur, thrashed him with a stick for not reciting a table. I rushed to the school, but the teachers started hurling abuses at me and threatened me. I returned and talked to my husband, Gurdeep Singh, following which we approached the police,” said Amandeep.

She said her son feared going to school again and started screaming when she pursued him to get ready for school on Thursday.

Sub-inspector Pawan Kumar, incharge, Ghumar Mandi police post, said the complaint had been received and the police would take appropriate action.

School headmistress Tarsem Kaur refuted the parents' allegations. She claimed Balpreet was a slow learner and the teacher was just helping him revise the tables, adding that the matter had been resolved amicably.
