Two unidentified men barged into a State Bank of Patiala ATM on the Patiala-Sirhind Road in the wee hours of Saturday (around 2am) to loot the facility, did not succeed, but killed the 32-year-old guard and are now absconding.
Police said the accused, whose pictures were captured on CCTV cameras and have been made public, seemed unaware that the guard room in the ATM was occupied. The deceased guard has been identified as Gurpreet Singh (32), a resident of Green Park Colony.
"Prior to making the attempt to break open the ATM, the two accused had first done a recce. They seemed to be unaware of the presence of a guard room, situated behind the ATM machine. Ten minutes thereafter, the accused came armed with iron roads and broke the CCTV cameras inside the kiosk. Then they tried to break open the ATM, which had Rs 35 lakh cash," said a police source.
Alerted by the noise, the guard confronted the two men. He was attacked with an iron rod and other sharp-edged weapons, killing him on the spot.
The police were alerted by people who went to the ATM to withdraw cash at around 5am and found the guard's body in a pool of blood.
Senior superintendent of police Gurmeet Singh Chauhan said the accused had been captured on CCTV. A forensic team also took fingerprints and other samples from the spot.
"From the footage, the accused seem to be novices. Their photographs have been released," the SSP added. The accused have been booked under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC.
