The alertness of the police on night duty averted a robbery at the Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) of the Punjab and Sind Bank (PSB) at Sidhwan village under Tibber police station,12 km from here on Tuesday.
The policemen riding two motor cycles were on routine duty when at about 3am they happened to see an Indigo car parked a few yards away from the said ATM on Gurdaspur-Kahnuwan road.
“Though they passed by it at the first instance, the policemen got suspected and returned to the place where the car was parked in suspicious circumstances. The police men found the car missing from there,” said SSP Gurpreet Singh Toor.
“They suspected that there were two persons in the car and had come to break into the ATM. When the police arrived at the ATM, they found that the alleged robbers had unsuccessfully tried to break open the ATM. The cash chest of the ATM contained Rs 6 lakh when the alleged robbers tried to loot it,” the SSP said, adding that a case had been registered against unknown persons in this regard at the Tibber police station.
The SSP said the night patrolling by police in the rural areas where ATM's were located in the district had been intensified.
