In the wake of a writ petition filed by 'Nehru Park Bachao Sangarsh Committee' in the Punjab and Haryana high court, the Gurdaspur municipal council has dropped its ongoing project of turning Nehru Park ,also called Sukka Talaw, into a car parking lot.
The Sukka Talaw Bachao Sangarsh Committee (STBSC) had stated, in its writ petition filed in the high court last year, that the turning of the Nehru Park into a parking lot in Gurdaspur was being done in violation of the town planning norms by the Punjab Urban Development Authority (PUDA).
STBSC leaders Sukhwinder Singh Kahlon and Makhan Kohar, while addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, disclosed that Gurdaspur council executive officer, in a letter dated April 25 addressed to Kahlon, conveyed that keeping in view the agitation of the STBSC and its writ petition in the court, the project of turning Nehru Park into a parking lot had been dropped immediately. The letter, however, stated that if materialised, the proposed project would have benefited the public at large.
On September 17,2012, local MLA and chief parliamentary secretary Gurbachan Singh Babbehali had laid the foundation stone of this project.
The local units of various organisations of farmers, labourers and employees had started a joint agitation against the project. The representatives of these organisations had urged the municipal council authorities to shift venue of the parking project to the old Zila Parishad office which was adjacent to the Nehru Park.
The STBSC leaders also thanked the people of Gurdaspur for supporting them in their agitation to save the century old heritage (Nehru Park) of the town.
