The local municipal council authorities have halted, at least for the timebeing, the ongoing work to convert half of the land of the Nehru Park here into a parking lot.
The development comes in the wake of a meeting convened by local MLA and chief parliamentary secretary Gurbachan Singh Babbehali here on Monday on the contentious issue.
On the other hand, the 'Nehru Park Bachao Sangharsh Committee', which had given a call for a protest march and a rally at the MC office on Tuesday, have withdrawn their agitation plan.
Addressing the meeting, Babbehali said that he had got funds earmarked by the state government for a parking lot on the park land since it was urgently needed in the town.
The SAD MLA claimed that in the absence of a suitable parking lot, Gurdaspur residents faced difficulty in parking their vehicles sinc police did not allow them to park on market roads. Wrongly parked vehicels were impounded by police and released only after payment of hefty fines, Babbehali added.
He promised to convene a meeting with the local residents within a week to decide the fate of the proposed car parking lot, adding that he would honour the public opinion on the issue.
Meanwhile, the Nehru Park Bachao Sangharsh Committee has called its own meeting on Saturday to decide the future course of action on the contentious issue.
Its members have demanded that the parking lot should not be constructed at the Nehru Park but on land available close to the main market in Gurdaspur.
