The mortal remains of army jawan Manpreet Singh (29), who was killed in a terrorist attack in Uri sector in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, were consigned to flames with full military and state honours at his native village Awaan in Gurdaspur district on Sunday in the presence of his family members, friends and the area residents.

A contingent of 17 Sikh Regiment fired shots in the air and pointed their guns towards the ground to salute and pay their last respects to the martyr before the pyre was lit by his elder brother Gurjinder Singh, who is also serving in the army.

On behalf of the army, Tibri military station commander Col AK Mour laid a wreath on the martyr’s body, while on behalf of the state government, additional deputy commissioner (general) A Karthik paid him floral tributes.

Presenting a rare example of courage, Manpreet’s mother also carried the coffin from her house to the cremation ground.
