Owing to its environment that is conducive to growth of litchi, Gurdaspur district will be developed as a sub-state hub for the fruit cultivation.
Gurdaspur deputy commissioner Abhinav Trikha made this announcement while presiding over a meeting of the district agriculture production committee here on Friday. Trikha said this decision of the Punjab government will boost horticulture in the district.
Trikha, however, advised farmers avoid going to unauthorised nurseries that sell substandard saplings, causing loss to them. He named the nurseries being run by the state horticulture department at Qadian and Gurdaspur and authorised nurseries, namely Ohro and Gobind Nursery at Dinanagar, from where the farmers should purchase seeds and saplings.
Farmers have already been growing litchi in and around Dinanagar for a long time, and they are prosperous because of the good returns. One such farmer, Dilbagh Singh Cheema, said litchi growers need government patronage to further extend the area under cultivation.
