Faridkot: In a shocking incident, a Class-10 student tried to commit suicide by setting herself ablaze at local Ambedkar Nagar as she was allegedly being harassed and molested persistently by youths from her neighbourhood. The victim and suspects belong to the Dalit community and live in same locality near Kaneana Gate in Faridkot.
The girl reportedly received 90% burns and was struggling for life at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot, where she was rushed by her parents and neighbours after the incident.
Additional chief judicial magistrate Gurdarshan Kaur has recorded her statement at the medical college, while police have registered a case against five people, including main accused Thana Singh alias Pamma and his wife.
"We have registered a case under Sections 353 and 506 of the IPC and three of the suspects have been arrested. The main suspect and his wife are at large and we are conducting raids to nab them," Gurpreet Singh Toor, senior superintendent of police, Faridkot, said.
As per the FIR, the victim's father, a rickshaw-puller, had alleged that the some youths had been harassing his daughter for a long time and she had also stopped going to school as they started following her. The suspects would keep standing in front of his house and would cast indecent remarks, the victim's father alleged.
He claimed that the girl was being harassed for a long time and the family had even approached police about a year ago but no action was taken against the accused.
The girl reportedly poured kerosene and set herself on fire when her father was manhandled by the accused after he had objected to their behaviour.
