A day after a 23-year-old woman returned to her maternal house following assurance by her husband that she would not be harassed for dowry anymore, she allegedly hanged herself at her house in Ghawaddi village of Dehlon on Thursday.
The accused, Veerpal Singh, a labourer was arrested on Friday.
The victim, Manjot Kaur, had married Veerpal Singh over a year ago and had a seven-month-old son, according to her father, Baldev Singh, resident of Khanpur village of Mullanpur.
Singh alleged that Veerpal used to physically and mentally harass his daughter for dowry, which Kaur had told them about several times. Relatives repeatedly intervened and helped sort out the discord.
He further added that on Tuesday, Kaur left her husband for her maternal house after harassment for dowry. However, Veerpal visited her on Wednesday, and promised to never harass her again, following which Kaur returned with him.
Later, on Thursday, Veerpal informed Singh that Kaur had hanged herself from the fan, following which Singh lodged a complaint against Veerpal at Dehlon police station.
Sub-inspector Amandeep Singh Brar, station house officer (SHO) at Dehlon police station, said following the complaint of victim’s father, accused Veerpal was arrested and booked under section 304-B (dowry death) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The police will produce the accused before the court on Saturday.
