Local MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal has welcomed the decision of the BJP to anoint Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as the prime ministerial candidate. She claimed that Modi was the right choice, especially as he had worked hard to establish a culture of development at the grassroots level.

She also alleged that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government was one of the most corrupt regimes in independent India.

"This government is on its way out and thus is trying to save itself from the people's wrath by passing bills in Parliament that only reveal a fake concern for the citizens. By now people have understood that they have been exploited."

She claimed that the government was kow-towing to multinational companies and thus the prices were rising every second day in the country.

Later, addressing sangat darshan programmes in various villages of Bathinda, Badal said that the Punjab government's finances were on a sound footing.

"People know that the financial health of the state is sound as witness development projects taking off at a rapid state."

Later, Harsimrat asked district officers to redress some grievances of the people on the spot and also distributed sewing machines to girls, who have completed their course from Nanhi Chhan projects in the district.
