A day after campaigning for the Haryana assembly seats ended, radical Sikh leader and former Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (ad hoc) member Baljeet Singh Daduwal, 53, was on Tuesday released from the central jail here after seven weeks of preventive arrest.

“Dadwual has been released along with Randhir Singh and Jaswinder Singh after the local SDM (subdivisional magistrate) accepted their bail bonds on Tuesday,” said the leader’s counsel, Kulinder Singh Sekhon. On August 22, the police showed them arrested from near Chandbhan village and claimed to have seized some illegal weapons from them. Dadwual, however, termed the case a state government ploy to keep him away from the Haryana elections scene.

“By this false case, the government tried its best to keep me from campaigning in Haryana, where I have many followers, even though my mission is to preach religion only and I no links with any political party. I fail to understand why the government is so afraid of me that it detains me in one case after another. Is it because I am a member of the HSGMC?” said Daduwal, speaking with media after his release late evening.

Dadual was supposed to be released on last Friday (October 9) after the high court had granted him bail on Tuesday before in an attempt-to-murder case registered on March 16, 2009, after a Dera-Sikh row at Bajakhana village of Faridkot district. The Farikdot police, however, detained him again under preventive measures on Friday immediately after he stepped outside the jail where hundreds of him supporters waited outside.

The Mansa police took him on transit remand in an old case and put two more cases against him after his arrest in Faridkot on August 22. He, however, secured bail in all other cases, including the 5-years-old matter in which the high court granted him bail on October 6. Due to his re preventive arrest, however, he was not released from jail.

His father-in-law had approached the high court after his re-arrest. His family has alleged political vendetta and claimed that he was picked up from Gurdwara Jandialisar near Kot Shamir village of Bathinda district on the night of August 21 but shown as arrested from near Jaitu town in Faridkot district.

“We have prayed to the HC to restore him the possession of Gurdwara Jandialisar, where he lives with his family,” said Gurmeet Singh, his father-in-law.
