A day after posting her resignation from the BJP on Facebook, chief parliamentary secretary (CPS) and Amritsar East MLA Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu on Saturday continued to be incommunicado while BJP state chief Kamal Sharma said he had not received any resignation letter from her. It was learnt that she had gone to New Delhi, thus she also skipped the meeting in Chandigarh of the party’s state executive, of which she is a member on account of being a legislator. Her husband, cricketer-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, has also remained quiet on the whole episode.
The CPS, after posting her resignation on the social media on Friday morning, was not available for comment.
Efforts made to contact her proved futile on Saturday as her phone was switched off while her staff here also maintained silence. Dr Sidhu’s resignation on Facebook read, “Finally, I have resigned from BJP. The burden is over.” Hours later, she reappeared on FB through a post that questioned the working of the improvement trust and also targeted CM Parkash Singh Badal. She talked about the improvement trust not releasing tenders worth Rs 79 crore passed for development works in her constituency. Later, she went incommunicado.
The CPS has been upset with the state government, especially the Amritsar Improvement Trust, for not floating tenders meant for development in her constituency. In fact, Dr Sidhu and her her husband, a three-time former Amritsar MP, have been vocal against the BJP’s ruling partner Shiromani Akali Dal for long, even expressly against chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son and deputy Sukhbir Singh Badal. Not long ago, she had given loud hints of gravitating towards the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) “if the BJP stayed on with the SAD”.
Why is Dr Sidhu angry?
o Dr Sidhu was upset with the improvement trust for not floating tenders worth Rs 79 crore meant for development in her constituency. She blamed CM Badal for this.
o In the past, she had accused Badal of not giving her time and once even had barged into his sangat darshan.
o Dr Sidhu has been upset with deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal for “not giving” the promised Rs 100 crore to her constituency.
o The CPS has been regularly accusing the SAD of ignoring BJP workers.
o She was also upset that the dream projects of her husband Navjot Singh Sidhu for Amritsar never took off.
