HC orders status quo on allotment of lawyers' chambers

The Punjab and Haryana high court has issued notices of motion for March 10 to the financial commissioner of revenue (FCR), Jalandhar deputy commissioner, presidents of the Punjab Bar Council and Nakodar Bar Association on a public interest (PIL) petition filed by advocate Rohit Narang and others on the allotment of lawyers' chambers here.

The petitioners had submitted in the court of Justice Ritu Bahri that as per the resolution passed by the bar association on Februrary 27, 2010,, it was unanimously decided that the allotment of chambers shall be made by draw of lots but now chambers have been allotted on the basis of seniority.

The court ordered status quo on the allotment of chambers and adjourned the hearing to March 10. The DC had allotted the 70 chambers to lawyers at the new judicial complex on the basis of the seniority list prepared by the bar association.
