The three-member Punjab and Haryana high court collegium headed by chief justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul has recommended to the Supreme Court the names of three advocates for elevation as high court judges.
These are two Punjab additional advocate generals namely Anupinder Singh Grewal and Hari Pal Verma, and senior advocate Sunil Chadha.
Grewal, who has vast experience since his enrollment as an advocate in 1992, has served the Punjab advocate general's office for nearly two decades and is additional advocate general for the last nine years. He has defended the state government in all types of civil, criminal and service matters. He has also been appearing as senior panel counsel for the Central government in many cases.
Enrolled as an advocate in 1986, Verma has also been appearing for the Punjab government in important cases, mainly in civil matters, and is at present defending the state in cases listed before the division bench headed by the chief justice. He has been working as additional advocate general in Punjab since 2011 and had also worked earlier as deputy advocate general in Haryana.
Senior advocate Sunil Chadha's name has been cleared by the high court collegium for the second time. Earlier his name was recommended by the high court collegium in 2011, along with those of advocates JS Puri and Subir Sehgal, but all the three names could not attain finality.
After 26 years of his enrolment as an advocate in 1987, Chadha, who has dealt both in civil as well as criminal cases, was designated as senior advocate in January this year.
File reaches Haryana guv's office
Though the recommended names by high court collegium are directly forwarded to the Supreme Court for its consideration but assent of both the states of Punjab and Haryana is also requisite for attaining finality. It is learnt that the concerned file after getting comment of Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has reached Haryana Governor's office.
