Health officials issue 30 fines against smoking in public

District Health department collected 5,440 from raid conducted at several places on Tuesday.

Team led by District Health Officer Dr Abnash Kumar issued 30 challans under the Cigarette and other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA),2003.

The raids were conducted at Feroze Gandhi main market and Model town extension area. People found smoking in public places, kiosks/vendors not displaying proper warning banners, and vendors advertising tobacco products were issued challans.

The team included food safety of ficers RP Garg and Yogesh Goyal, ASI Tarsem Singh and constables Rahul, Surinder Bhadur, Amandeep Singh and Gursewak Singh.

Kumar said under the COTPA, people couldn’t smoke or chew tobacco in public places and that the guilty would be fined 200.

“Also, tobacco or its products cannot be advertised, and doing so can invite a fine of 1,000 and imprisonment up to two years.

No tobacco product can be sold without a health warning, else a fine of 5,000 can be imposed, besides imprisonment of two years, or both. Other than that, no tobacco products can be sold within 100 yards radius of any educational institution", added Dr Kumar.
