Heavy snowfall on second day in Kullu

punjab Updated: Feb 15, 2014 22:18 IST

Inclement weather on the second consecutive day adversely affected life in Kullu district, disrupting 90% traffic and damaging 323 transformers.

On Saturday afternoon, Kullu was covered with a white sheet of snow, forcing most people to stay indoors, while others ventured out to enjoy the snow.

Himachal Road Transport Corporation depot regional manger Pawan Kumar Sharma said that due to continuous snowfall, bus services were affected, causing a loss of nearly Rs 5 lakh.

Bus service was disrupted in Raysan and other areas of the district, including Lag valley, Banjar valley and Khrahal valley.

State electricity department superintendent engineer Kullu Parvesh Thakur said that due to heavy snow, many trees were uprooted along the power supply lines in the remote areas of the district, affecting power supply in these areas. "As soon as the weather becomes normal, power supply would be restored in the district," he added.

Manali received 60cm snow, Solang 90 cm and Lahaul and Spiti 20 cm, on Saturday.

Kullu deputy commissioner Rakesh Kanwar said no untoward incident was reported, and an advisory was issued to the sub-divisional magistrates in the district to close educational institutions for up to two days in the areas which received heavy snowfall.
