In what is being seen as a mere formality, Chugh and district in-charge Narottam Dev Ratti on Tuesday met all the elected members of the party to get their opinion on the mayoral candidate. Sources said the party has decided on former municipal council president and district president Shiv Sood, a close confidant of former minister Tikshan Sud, for the post.
The BJP had won 17 wards but one Independent and three rebel winners had also joined the bandwagon soon after election results were out. Each member has been told about the party choice and instructed to act accordingly on Wednesday when the election takes place. State BJP president Kamal Sharma and local bodies minister Anil Joshi are expected to be present at the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected members.
The BJP has conceded posts of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor to alliance partner but SAD leadership is divided on choice of candidates. The faction close to district president Surinder Singh Bhulewal Rathan is keen to install market committee chairman Avtar Singh Johal as senior deputy mayor but former Rajya Sabha member Varinder Singh Bajwa is lobbying for his former personal assistant Avtar Singh Kapoor. Final call would be taken by party president and deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, it has been reliably learnt. BJP and SAD together have a strength of 31 members in the 50 member house.
With 17 members and a vote of local MLA, Congress is hoping for a miracle to happen. In case BJP or SAD gets ruptured, chances of which are very remote, Congress can put its bet on the dissident group.
