The rural police on Wednesday seized 2.25-kg heroin and arrested three people, including two brothers, in this connection.
They also impounded a Skoda car and a canter and reported arrested accused Mumtaj of Rampur district in Uttar Pradesh to be linked to an inter-state drug-smuggling racket run by one Bacchu Miyan, who was close to some of the UP politicians.
With arrest warrants for Miyan, a team is off to Uttar Pradesh to arrest him. At a press conference here on Wednesday, superintendent of police (detective) HPS Khakh gave the credit of the latest haul to Shiv Kumar, in charge of special staff, and his team that laid a trap near the GT road in Mehatpur after a secret input and flagged down the canter for checking.
The police have claimed that 1.25-kg heroin was hidden in two parts of the canter machinery and Mumtaj was behind the wheel. "His brief was to receive the contraband from the gang of Bacchu Miyan, whose relatives have been mayors and even legislators in Uttar Pradesh," said the SP, adding: "Mumtaj is just a pawn in the huge drug-trade network in the state; and we'll also go after the influential bigwigs."
Another team led by sub-inspector Baljinder Singh laid a trap near the Bidhipur railway crossing and brothers Kuldeep Singh and Surinder Singh were caught in it. Police claim to have seized 1-kg heroin from their Skoda car.
The brothers with a history of being involved in similar crime have come out of jail recently. The police registered both cases of Wednesday under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
