Punjabi singer among 4 held for highway robberies

The district police on Friday claimed to have arrested four members of a highway robbers’ gang, including Punjabi singer Balkar Ankhila.

Most of the gang members are residents of Valtoha and Bhikhiwind area of Tarn Taran district and they had been operating across Punjab for the past 10-12 years, said Faridkot senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sukhminder Singh Mann.

Their modus operandi was to lure truck drivers with drugs and serve them poison or highly toxic soft drinks. Once the drivers fell unconscious, the gang members would drive away with the loaded trucks after throwing off the victims.

The gang members were storing the looted goods with three accomplices, running junk shops in Bhikhiwind.

The police alleged that in one of the cases of looting, Ankhila, his brother Avtar Singh Taar, brother-in-law Rafi Mohammad and two others killed a truck driver and looted Rs 62,000 and 350 packs of refined oil in Kotkapura.

On Wednesday, the police arrested two youths, Satnam Singh and Sonu Messah, and recovered drugs from them. Their interrogation revealed that they were part of a highway robbers’ gang.

Other gang members are Baaj Singh, Dalip Singh, Kuldeep Singh, Rajesh Kumar, Tirath and Amarjit Singh of Valtoha area of Tarn Taran.
