Himachal 2nd in accident deaths per lakh population

With road accidents in the hill state claiming 1,199 lives in 2014, Himachal Pradesh (HP), with 17.2 accident deaths per lakh population, stands second in the country.

Tamil Nadu leads with 22.1 deaths per lakh population, as per the recently released Road Accidents Report of 2014 by the transport research wing of the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH). The report was compiled after inputs from various state police headquarters.

Karnataka is in the third place with 17.1 deaths per lakh population. The national average is 11.3.

Besides, Himachal had the sixth highest rate of injured per lakh population at 79.9. Kerala (116.6), Tamil Nadu (113.2), Goa (98.1), Karnataka (92.8) and Puducherry (84.1) are ahead of Himachal.

In severity of road accidents, which signifies deaths per 100 accidents, Himachal ranks 13th in the country.

A total of 3,058 accidents were recorded in 2014 in Himachal, a jump of 2.5% from 2013. The number of deaths at 1,199 were 13.75% more than the previous year. As many as 5,576 got injured, which is a jump of 9.24% from the last year.

Among those killed in accidents, maximum fall in the age group of 25-44. In 3,058 accidents in the state, drivers in 451 cases had studied up to Class 8 and 798 were Class 10 pass-outs. 1,809 had studied beyond Class 10.

Rural areas more dangerous

More people got killed in rural areas of the hill state than in urban areas. In rural areas, in 1,920 accidents, 901 got killed and 3,757 got injured, while in urban areas in 1,138 accidents, 298 got killed and 1,819 got injured.

96% accidents due to fault of drivers

As many as 2,936 accidents, amounting to 96% of the total accidents, took place due to the fault of the driver that killed 1,148 (over 95% of total deaths) and injured 5,326 (over 95% of total injured).

There were 22 accidents that took place due to the fault of the driver of other vehicles that killed three and injured 30. No accident took place due to the fault of a pedestrian. Besides, 74 accidents took place due to a defect in the motor vehicle that killed 37 and injured 156.

As many as 25 accidents occurred due to poor road conditions that claimed 11 lives and left 63 injured. No accidents took place due to weather, fault of passenger, poor light, falling boulders, neglect of civic bodies and stray animals.

Speeding caused 90% accidents

In 2,763 accidents (over 90% of the total accidents), the driver exceeded the speed limit that killed 1,089 people (over 90% of total accident deaths) and injured 5,118 (over 91% of total injured in accidents).

A total of 74 accidents (about 2%) took place due to an inebriated driver that claimed 18 lives and left 107 injured. In 43 (over 1%) accidents, the driver was on the wrong side of the road that led to 20 deaths and injuries to 70.

In 31 accidents, the driver did not give right of way to a vehicle resulting in one death. In 13 accidents, he passed on a curve killing five and injuring 20.

Nature of accidents

As many as 458 accidents took place due to overtaking (about 15%) that killed 129 (over 10%) and injured 777 (about 14%).

In 359 hit and run accidents (11.7 %), 77 got killed (6.4 %) and 516 got injured (9.2 %).

In 233 head-on collisions (over7%), 58 got killed (over 4%) and 335 got injured (6%).

In a total of 187 skidding incidents (over 6%), 82 got killed (close to 7%) and 294 got injured (over 5%).

In 50 rear-end collisions, 10 got killed and 105 got injured. In 31 brushes/side swipes, seven got killed and 62 got injured. In 69 right-angled collisions, 23 got killed and 140 were injured. In 48 right-turn collisions, eight were killed and 90 injured. A total of 1,623 accidents fall under the category of others, in which 805 got killed and 3,257 were injured.

Accidents classified as per road condition

As many as 1,890 accidents (61.8%) took place on metalled roads where 759 were killed (63.3%) and 3,213 were injured (57.62%). A total of 810 accidents (26.49%) took place on surfaced roads where 259 were killed (21.6%) and 1,618 were injured (29.02%). 358 accidents (11.71%) took place on kutcha roads where 181 got killed (15.1%) and 745 got injured (13.36%).
