Himachal electorate grew by 28% in 16 years

Himachal Pradesh's electorate grew by 28.80% from 3.6 million in 1998 to 4.6 million, says the Election Commission. India's total electorate grew by 34.45% during this period, from 605.8 million to 814.5 million, according to statistics from the poll panel.

With a population of 6.8 million, the electorate in the hill state was 4.6 million during the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.

As many as 67,513 first time voters have been added to the voters' list in the past five years.

Chief electoral officer Narender Chauhan said Himachal Pradesh was one of the few states to have issued photo identity cards to all voters.

The state has four Lok Sabha seats: Shimla (reserved), Kangra, Mandi and Hamirpur.

Mandi is the biggest constituency in the state and covers almost two-thirds of the hill state.
