Hockey academy at world Sikh varsity inaugurated

SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar on Thursday inaugurated a hockey academy at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University here.

Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia, vice-chancellor, in his address said that the SGPC had been organizing "Khalsai Khed Mela" since 2002 in order to promote sports in the SGPC educational institutions.

The aim of the mela was to encourage youngsters for constructive sports competition and to eradicate drug addiction.

He further informed that the teams from more than 40 SGPC-run colleges participated in 25 competitions in this Khed Mela every year.

Walia said that the SGPC chief jathedar Avtar Singh in his address at the mela organized by Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College for Girls, Jhar Sahib, in 2012, had exhorted all colleges to prepare good hockey teams.

Walia added that the state had always played a leading role in hockey and Punjabi sportsmen had bagged gold medals in Olympic and Asian games.

Dr Walia informed that 26 girl students had already been selected in the junior wing of the university hockey academy and were getting training. Players for senior wing would be selected in the coming academic session. The university was proud to have the services of world renowned Dronacharya awardee Baldev Singh as chief hockey coach of this academy, who is credited with the grooming of hundreds of hockey players at the national and international level across the globe.

Besides the university is also encouraging athletics, basketball, volleyball, tennis, handball, football, gatka, archery, fencing and cricket among students.
