To reduce the incidence of crime against women and provide quick assistance, the district police chief has constituted a sexual assault response team (SART) in the district under the supervision of SP (detective).
SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill said that the team will comprise DSP (special branch), a lady inspector, a sub-inspector, three head constables and three lady constables. This team would assist the respective DSPs of sub-divisions in tackling crime against women, he said.
"The team will provide timely care to the victims of sexual assault, track the accused, help in the speedy trial of assault cases and take appropriate steps to check crime against women," the SSP said. He said the team members would be trained on technical lines and they would be provided specific uniforms so that they standout from the rest of the police force and are easily identifiable to the victims.
"The team would be on the job in a week's time and I hope that the effort would bring the kind of help and justice to the victims of sexual assault they need and strengthen their faith in the criminal justice system," he claimed.
The SSP revealed that asexual assault prevention response had also been constituted to prevent eve-teasing. This team would undertake random checking around the educational institutions and keep patrolling from 9 am to 5 pm. He hoped that the initiative would deter rape related crimes. Informing that 27 rape cases were pending in the district, he revealed that DSP level officers would examine them.
"The real culprits must be punished but at the same time it is crucial that no innocent is implicated," he added.
