A district court on Thursday acquitted Babbar Khalsa International activist Narain Singh Chaura and two others of charges of murder of Pardhan Singh, a dera head of Baddon who was shot dead on May 16, 2010.
After groping in the dark for long, the police had claimed having solved the murder mystery and maintained that Chaura, then in Pakistan with BKI militant Wadhawa Singh, had given deadly weapons to militant Pal Singh in France, who in turn had handed them to handlers Makhan Singh and Karanbir Singh, who killed Pardhan Singh over certain religious issues.
Police had claimed having arrested Karanbir on October 18, 2010, along with a heavy cache of arms and ammunition but when he was taken for interrogation in the CIA staff headquarters, he escaped from there.
The court of additional sessions judge Lachhman Singh Gill, however, did not find substance in the police accounts and acquitted Chaura, Makhan and Pal Singh. All three had been arrested by police at different times. Chaura is facing several other cases of unlawful activities, including the infamous Burail jailbreak case.
