Tension prevailed in Garhdiwala town on Sunday when hundreds of villagers laid siege to Hoshiarpur-Dasuya road for more than seven hours, demanding the registration of murder case against the family of local youth Nishan Singh Shana.

Shana was shot dead on July 10 and the police had booked nine people, including one Kuldip Singh for the murder.

Kuldip has then allegedly committed suicide by reportely jumping into the Kandi canal. However, his family had been maintaining that somebody from Shana's family has murdered Kuldip.

The police had booked SAD leader Rajwinder Singh Raja, Kuldip Singh, latter's son Pardeep Singh and wife Gurbax Kaur and five others.

While Raja was arrested, Kuldip and his family had gone underground. On July 10, someone reported to the police that Kuldip had ended his life by leaping in the canal in Hajipur.

Upon recovering his body, the police had done inquest proceedings.

For four days the body was kept in a mortuary in Tanda. On the arrival of his family members from abroad, the body was brought to Garhdiwala. and a demonstration launched.

His kin and protesters kept the body on the road on Sunday and refused to cremate it till a case under Section 302 of IPC was registered. They alleged that Kuldip and his family had been falsely implicated in the Shana murder case.

Dasuya sub divisional magistrate Barjinder Singh, SP (headqarter) Amrik Singh Dhami, DSP Tanda, Harjinder Singh and other civil and police officials reached the spot and held talks with the protesters but the latter remained adamant on registration of a murder case.

Later in the evening SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill also arrived and started negotiations with representatives of the protesters. Blockade was lifted around 8 pm when a case of abetment to suicide (Section 306 of IPC) was registered against three relatives of Shana at Hajipur police station.
