The Punjab and Haryana high court on Thursday stayed the arrest of former Hoshiarpur sub-divisional magistrate (SDM), Anand Sagar Sharma, in the multi-crore Hoshiarpur land scam.

The high court bench of justice Jitendra Chauhan asked the Punjab police to not arrest Sharma, in case it planned to do so. The order was passed as government failed to file response on Sharma’s plea filed in March 2017. The HC had asked the state to file reply three days prior to the hearing, however, it was filed on Thursday.

The vigilance bureau had alleged that Sharma “misused his position to fudge, tamper with and fraudulently prepare revenue records to benefit Akali leaders and property dealers”. He also allegedly issued compensation on commercial rates for agricultural land to benefit Akali leaders and property dealers where even the change of land use (CLU) was not applied. The land was acquired for a national highway.
