Family members of Geeta, 26, alleged negligence on part of doctors of Puri Nursing Home, Model town, led to her death and her eight-month-old child in the womb.

The family members protested outside the nursing home and registered a complaint at Model Town police station and demanded action against the doctor on Sunday.

Ravinder Singh, brother-in-law of the deceased, said, “My sister-in-law was pregnant and Dr Harpeet Kaur of Puri Nursing home was treating her. On Saturday night, she was not feeling well, thus we rushed her to the nursing home. She was admitted but the doctor came only for two minutes and around 4 am, they told us that she was no more.”

Model Town SHO Inderjeet Singh said, “We had registered a case under section 304 A (causing death due to negligence) against Dr Harpreet Kaur. The body was taken to postmortem and next action will be taken after knowing the cause of the death of deceased.” No arrest has been made in the case so far.

On the other hand, Dr Puri declined all allegations. She said, “The deceased was having problem of hypertension during her pregnancy. High blood pressure during pregnancy causes some complications, at times leading maternal death. When the patient was brought to hospital, I immediately attended her and prescribed medicines and vaccination. I looked after her for two to three times and suddenly she got some attack, which might be the reason of her death.”

Meanwhile, Dr Raj Kumar Sharma, president of IMA, Ludhiana said, “As per the directions of the department and guidelines of the Supreme Court, no direct FIR could be lodged against a doctor for negligence in treatment, until proper investigation by an expert team, that too appointed by the designated authority, recommends so.”
