A warden of a Government Physical College hostel in Patiala beat a student to death following a brief argument between them, police said.
The deceased was identified as Gurpreet Singh (25) from Bhai Roopa village of Bathinda district.
The incident occurred on Friday night when Amandeep Singh, the hostel warden, had an argument with Gurpreet, who was doing his masters at the college, police said.
However, the verbal duel turned ugly when Amandeep beat Gurpreet with a baseball bat, leading to his death on the spot, police said, adding some unidentified persons were present at the time of the incident.
The accused, Amandeep, a native of Gurdaspur district, managed to flee.
Upon getting information, police officials reached the spot and collected information about the incident. Senior police officials, including superintendent of police (City) Pritpal Singh, also arrived at the place the next morning.
Police also claimed to have found sharp-edged weapons during a search in the warden's room.
Police registered a case of murder against the hostel warden and some unidentified people.
Harpal Singh, deputy superintendent of police, said they had formed a team of police officials to nab the accused. Police are also quizzing college staffers and students to know more details about the incident.
The body was handed over to the family members after post mortem.
