Chandigarh 5-star hotel staffer sent to judicial custody in rape case, claims harassment

Sunny, a Himachal Pradesh resident, was arrested on Tuesday for raping a guest of the hotel and stealing Rs 23,000 from her room.

A local court on Wednesday sent an employee of a five-star hotel Taj, Sector 17, to judicial custody for raping a guest on Monday.

Sunny Kumar,29, was produced in the court of chief judicial magistrate (CJM) Akshdeep Mahajan wherein the investigating officer had also sought judicial custody for the accused which was granted .

Sunny, a Himachal Pradesh resident, was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly raping a guest of the hotel and stealing Rs 23,000 from her room. The accused had been working with the hotel for the last five years in the food and beverages section, said police. 

Talking to mediapersons outside the court, Sunny claimed that he had been falsely implicated in the matter calling it ‘sheer harassment’ since whatever happened was with the girl’s consent after she wished to celebrate her birthday on the day of the incident.

When asked about the money stolen from the girl’s room , he told HT, “I didn’t take any money, rather I gave her.” When asked to elaborate, he said he had given the 24-year-old victim Rs 40,000 so that she would withdraw the case.

The case

According to the police, the victim, hailing from Madhya Pradesh, had been working with a reputed IT company in Jaipur. She was here on an official trip and was putting up in the hotel.

The victim told the police that she had come in contact with Sunny during her stay in the hotel. She had checked in the hotel only on Monday. She had accompanied him to his house in Sector 22 on Monday evening.  She alleged that the accused raped her at his house and later she found that Rs 23,000 she was carrying was missing from her room. 

The victim called the police on Tuesday morning, alleging that she was raped. The police went to the hotel and nabbed the accused.

The victim has told the police that she had accompanied the accused to his house to celebrate her birthday.

A case under Sections 376 (rape) and 380 (theft) against the accused was registered at the Sector-17 police station.
