Even though a magisterial probe is on in Moga about the encounter, Ranjodh presented a detailed theory. “It was round 7pm when we finally noticed Rinku and Sukhpal near a white Lancer car a few kilometres from the toll plaza on the Moga-Baghapurana bypass. We had gone to Rinku’s house earlier but could not find him,” he said.

Ranjodh said that he and another set of cops led by sub-inspector Rajdeep Singh were in separate vehicles. He asked Rajdeep to reach near the Lancer as they were closer. “Rajdeep and other cops including head constable Surinder stopped near the Lancer and went towards Rinku. Just then four persons including Sukhdev Singh (who was gunned down) and Rinku opened fire. Surinder got injured, and Rajdeep also got shot in his stomach when he sought to save him.”

In retaliation, the cops fired and killed two men, later identified as Sukhdev Singh and Inderjit Singh ‘Gora’. Ranjodh claims, “I was not aware who we had actually killed, even after reaching the hospital. When someone told me it was Sukhdev, I was not aware who he was exactly.”
