As many as eight people were killed and 21 others sustained injuries when a private bus (HP14A-4256) rolled down a gorge on Thursday evening at Chambidhar in Rajgarh sub-division of Sirmaur district.
The bus was on its way to Habban from Solan. Those killed have been identified as Parbhu Ram (58), Sheela (60), Sonu (30), Vidhya Devi (57), Shakuntla Devi (58), Akhil Kumar (24), Sada Nand (55) and Ronni.
The cause of the mishap is yet to be ascertained but preliminary investigations point to rash driving as the possible reason.
Of the injured, 14 have been admitted to a hospital in Solan, while six other wil severe injuries were referred to PGI, Chandigarh, and one to IGMC, Shimla.
The injured have been identified as Babu Ram, Pariksha, Savita, Jagat Ram, Ved Prakash, Amrita, Nitika, Deepak, Pankaj Sharma, Saurabh Sharma, Rahul Thakur (driver), Vivek Bhagnal, Virender Kumar, Sanjeev, Prithvi Raj, Dil Bahadur, Nisha Devi, Jitender Kumar, Dhirender (conductor) and Champa Devi.
Rajgarh DSP Yogesh Rolta said a case of negligent driving had been registered against the driver.
Deputy commissioner BC Badalia and superintendent of police Soumya Sambsivan also visited the spot at midnight.
Badalia said a magisterial probe had been ordered and Rajgarh SDM asked to submit a report within a month. He also said an ex gratia of Rs 3.5 lakh had been disbursed among the kin of those killed.
Governor Acharya Devvrat and chief minister Virbhadra Singh have also expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident. In his condolence message, the chief minister has expressed deep sympathies with the bereaved families and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.
