A police complaint has been filed against India hockey captain, Sardar Singh, by a UK-born woman of Indian origin. In this exclusive interview to HT, Sardar denied they were engaged and rejected allegations that he had sexually exploited her.

A UK woman has filed a police complaint saying that you have sexually exploited her. What are your comments?

I never exploited her or took any advantage on the pretext of marriage. It’s wrong to say that I have assaulted or sexually exploited her. Till now, I have not seen the police complaint, so I don’t know the contents and that’s why I cannot comment on it.

The woman has stated in her complaint that you were engaged to her and that you are now running away from marriage?

I never got engaged to her. If that was the case, wouldn’t there be a function with the families? And wouldn’t the people know about it as I am a public personality? I knew her for long time, but that doesn’t mean we are engaged. As things didn’t work out between us, we parted ways. For the last four-five months, and may be even more, we didn’t meet and we are not in touch. So, I don’t know why this complaint comes now. I am sad to hear about such a thing.

You are saying that you never got engaged. But there was a tweet from your official Twitter handle (@8_SardarSingh) acknowledging a tweet by her that said, “Such an amazing day with @8_SardarSingh. Excited to finally have confirmed the date we will be officially tying the knot. #weddingbells.” Why tweet if there were no such plans?

As I said, I knew her for a long time and we were good friends, so she knew my Twitter account and was even handling it. At that time, she herself tweeted that from my account. I was not active on social media for a long time, including the period about which you are mentioning. Last year, I even tweeted a video from my friend Rupinderpal’s account about my absence from social media and told everyone that “please don’t subscribe thinking that it’s my account”. Things didn’t work out between us, so for quite a long time we have not been together. When I said we never got engaged, confirmation about marriage dates doesn’t arise.

You even took her to your village Sant Nagar in Sirsa (Haryana) and introduced her to your family. She posted pictures taken with your family on Facebook.

I took her to my village as I wanted her to meet my parents and see from where I hailed. But I think she didn’t like the place and wanted me to settle down in England, which wouldn’t have been possible for me.

You say things didn’t work out between you two. What were the reasons?

That was between us, it won’t be nice on my part to put that on a public platform. The only thing I can say is that since the time we qualified for the Olympics after winning the Asian Games gold, my focus has shifted to the Rio Games, and for almost a year all other things have taken a back seat.

During the European tour in July last year, some incident happened between you and her in Belgium (During the European tour there, the woman visited the Indian team hotel and had some argument with Sardar, which turned into unruly incident. As per team sources, she called the cops but the matter was settled the intervention of team management).

She was there in Belgium and, yes, some incident happened and I reported the matter to my team coaches.
