A city resident has alleged that members of a human trafficking gang had been coercing him for the past several months into handing over custody of his three-yearold daughter, who is a citizen of Germany, so they could get someone else into that country to settle there permanently by fraudulently assigning him her guardianship.
Stating even his relatives had been putting pressure on him, Tara Singh, a resident of Naginder Nagar, claimed despite filing four separate complaints with city police commissioner Pramod Ban, the cops had not taken any action so far in the matter, leaving him feeling constantly worried over the prospect of being separated from his daughter.
Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Singh said he had travelled to Germany about eight years ago and had since been living with a Ger man woman with whom he had a son and a daughter. “The gang, comprising men of Indian origin, began tailing me in Germany and offered me Rs 15 lakh to hand over my daughter’s custody to them in order to bring someone else into the country to settle there,” alleged Singh.
However, Singh returned to India with his daughter, Sarmila Hider, in February, while his son continues to reside with his mother in Germany.
“Ever since I arrived back in India, the gang members have continued to harass me and even influenced my relatives to help them succeed in their nefarious design. As a result, my relatives have also started harassing me and have threatened to upload explicit videos of myself online if I didn’t transfer ownership of my property to them,” he alleged. Singh said he had even filed complaints with the prime minister and Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, but remained fearful about his daughter’s security.
