The hunger strike by students’ union under the banners of All India Students Federation (AISF), Students Federation of India (SFI), Punjabi University Research Scholars’ Association (PURSA) on Sunday entered its third day.
Students have been demanding the removal of the dean, provost and security officer of the university.
The union has refused to call off the strike and have been protesting in front of the office of the vice-chancellor. Students have been sitting on a hunger strike, timely replacing each other.
Union members said the declaration by the university to conduct an enquiry into the incident was eyewash. They said the authorities must first remove these officials and then conduct an enquiry.
Sumeet Shammi, an AISF activist, said the vice-chancellor should take responsibility for lathi charge on students and the cases which had been registered against students should be taken back. Shammi said, “We will not end our strike till our demands are fulfilled. Saying an enquiry on the issue will take place is not enough.”
Over the repealing of cases, he said the police had failed to define whether all cases would be repealed or only false cases would be given priority.
Meanwhile on Saturday, other students’ unions lifted their protests and opened the main gates of the university following a written assurance from the authorities and the administration to fulfil their demands.
