The Nakodar police have arrested Harvinder Singh, alias Taddi, a resident of Tahli village, his father Gurnam Singh, and mother Ranjit Kaur for abetting the suicide of his wife, Inderjeet Kaur alias Indu.

The case was registered at the behest of Hardev Singh, the father of the victim, Inderjeet. He told the police that his daughter and Harvinder had married in 2012, but she was tortured for dowry soon after marriage. She died on September 18, 2012, at the local civil hopsital, after consuming a poisonous substance.

Shankar police post in-charge and ASI Sukhdev Singh said that a case under Sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 34 (committing crime with common intention) of the IPC had been registered. He added that ex-sarpanch Darshan Singh, who was on Tuesday elected to the zila parishad from Shankar zone representing the Congress, was also named as a co-accused and had been booked.

Darshan allegedly helped the in-laws in keeping the victim under their custody. He, however, has claimed that he had been booked under political pressure.
