Reiterating that a person is innocent until proven guilty, Capt Amarinder Singh on Friday once again gave clean chit to Punjab cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia and said he never accused him of being involved in drug smuggling racket during his campaign for Lok Sabha polls in Amritsar.

Reacting to the charges of “cheating” the voters of his constituency on this issue, Amarinder, who is MP from Amritsar, said, “There is no question of cheating the voters. Today, the government has levelled similar charges on Raja Warring (Congress MLA). What I said for Majithia, I am saying for Raja Warring, that until a person is proven guilty by the investigating agency, you cannot point out fingers on him.”

Amarinder added that one can’t blame a person on basis of hearsay. “What happened in Amritsar region was that many died because of drug abuse and people blamed Majithia for this. It became an election issue. But you can’t blame a person – whether he is an Akali or Congressman -- on basis hearsay. Personally, I never pointed out finger on Majithia during my campaign,” he said.

Amarinder, however, admitted that the drug menace was one of the major issues in the state and the Congress party was concerned about it. He hoped that the Speaker would allow him to speak on the issue in Lok Sabha in the coming week. He said the party would also take up the local issues, including mining mafia and property tax pertaining to Patiala.
