In spite of the city being susceptible to earthquakes, 186 buildings constructed in its municipal jurisdiction have more than five storeys. The city lies in the high damage risk seismic zone-4.

In a written reply tabled in the state assembly on Wednesday, town and country planning minister Sudhir Sharma said 186 buildings with more than five floors were identified within the Shimla municipal corporation (SMC) limits.

"All these buildings have been acknowledged in a survey which was started by the SMC in 2010 and is still continuing. However, it is not clear whether these constructions have been constructed in accordance to the building rules and regulations," the reply read.

The survey showed that many of the buildings were old, and some had come up in rural areas that were later merged with the SMC land, and in 2003, approved by the Special Area Development Authority under the retention policy.

The reply added that there were some unauthorised constructions, and the cases were under consideration in the court of the SMC commissioner.
