More than 500 residents of Ward number 17 blocked traffic for more than an hour to protest against the municipal corporation for issuing notices to demolish their unauthorised structures at Cheema Chowk here on Monday.

Two ambulances remained stuck in the traffic jam for an hour due to the protest by the residents. Consequently, traffic police had to divert the route to help commuters reach their destinations.

Rampal Dhiman, a resident of Ward number 17, said: "We have been staying in these houses for the past 40 years and paying electricity and water bills regularly. Why the municipal corporation has issued us notices now. What were the authorities doing for the last 40 years."

Randir Kumar, another resident, rued: "Where will we go if the authorities will demolish our houses. We have spent so many years in these houses and now the municipal corporation has asked us to vacate these houses."

Harpal Kaur, a resident, said: "I don't understand why people block roads and cause inconvenience to commuters. They shoukd have staged the protest outside the MC office."
When contacted, Kamlesh Bansal, commissioner, Zone B, MC, said: "We have issued a final notice to 100 residents as they had failed to provide us residence proof documents and we will demolish the illegal structures soon."
