The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has decided to compile police cases registered against doctors without proper investigation, in violation of Supreme Court guidelines.
The body has condemned the Ludhiana police for filing an FIR against Dr Harpreet Kaur Puri on Sunday after allegations of negligence in treatment levelled by the family of a deceased pregnant woman.
Dr Sudhir Raj, president, IMA Punjab, said, “The Supreme Court has directed the police not to file FIR of negligence of treatment against a doctor without proper investigation by an expert committee appointed by a designated authority. But we have witnessed many cases where the police didn’t bother about the Supreme Court guidelines and filed direct FIR.”
Dr Raj said the IMA would now compile such cases, and target the concerned police officers, adding that they could also file a public interest litigation (PIL) for violation of SC guidelines.
Meanwhile, IMA Ludhiana, under the leadership of district president Dr Raj Kumar Sharma, met deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Nilambari Jagdale on Monday.
Dr Sharma said, “We met the DCP and handed over the orders given by DIG Punjab to Punjab police, telling about the verdict of Supreme Court. DCP assured us of not violating the SC order.”
Raj Kumar Sharma added that the FIR against Dr Harpreet was the second such case in the past fortnight where police filed a direct FIR against doctors and the IMA would not allow this.
