In Jalandhar, lewd songs blare from buses, no sign of security

In what can only be described as making a mockery of the Verma recommendations, HT's round of the Shaheed-E-Aazam Sardar Bhagat Singh Interstate bus terminal revealed that most guidelines were flouted.

Not a single bus was found to sport the contact numbers and photographs of the bus driver and the conductor within and outside the bus. Interestingly, contact details of the transport company were prominently displayed in case one needs to hire transport for functions.

No male or female police constables were found to accompany buses from 5.30pm to 7.30am as recommended. The bus staff is not even aware that such a recommendation exists. CCTVs have not been installed in even a single bus and there is no sign of Global Positioning System (GPS). Thick black films have been removed, but most private buses run lewd songs throughout the day.
No private transport company has given the list of its drivers to the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) with photographs and contact details as recommended by the Verma committee.

The instructions issued on Friday to ensure compliance of these norms seem a case of too little, too late.

Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Gurmeet Singh said, "A special drive to ensure compliance will be launched from Saturday."
