Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment and former Indian hockey skipper Pargat Singh has been reportedly giving a miss to the functions organised by the ruling party, triggering rumours that he is unhappy with the Badal government.
Pargat, who was in Jalandhar on Monday, gave a miss to the state-level function chaired by deputy chief minister and SAD chief Sukhbir Badal at Uggi village to launch the free health insurance scheme even as all MLAs and senior leaders from the district attended the event.
Ever since he became the MLA in 2012, Pargat has never missed a chance to accompany Sukhbir, whenever the latter visited the city.
On Tuesday as well, the MLA was conspicuous by his absence from the dharna organised by the SAD against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Not even single worker from the constituency represented by him attended the dharna.
As per the plan, two leaders besides the sitting MLAs from each constituency were supposed to address the dharna.
SAD district (urban) president Gurcharan Channi said he had called Pargat on Monday to visit the proposed dharna site outside the Jalandhar mini-secretariat.
“He had assured me that he will come after two hours but he did not turn up as we were to visit the site,” said Channi.
“In the Khuralgarh function on April 3, Pargat maintained a low-profile make any show of strength the way other MLAs did,” a senior leader. Pargat, when contacted, denied reports that he was upset with the SAD and was deliberately skipping the functions.
