Indira assassins' kin honour row: SAD slams Cong

punjab Updated: Jan 08, 2013 14:33 IST

The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Monday accused the opposition Congress of trying to politicise the issue of honouring the kin of Indira Gandhi's assassins Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh by Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh.

"First of all, the issue (honouring the kin) does not fall in the domain of the SAD or the state government. But, let me say that the Congress is trying to politicise the issue for vested interests as has been their habit," SAD spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema said here.

Reacting to Congress leader Sunil Jakhar's assertion that honouring the kin may threaten hard-earned peace in Punjab, Cheema said, "It is the habit of Congress people to make issues out of non-issues."

"There is no threat to Punjab's peace. During the SAD-BJP rule, communal harmony has been maintained," he said.

Giani Gurbachan Singh had on Sunday presented a 'siropa' to Tirlok Singh, father of Satwant Singh, at a function organised by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). The jathedar also accorded the assassins the status of "martyrs of faith".
