A 32-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing a labourer by hitting his head with a log of wood at Kabir Nagar, Tibba Road, on Friday night.

The victim has been identified as Rama Shankar, 35, of Kabir Nagar, Tibba Road.

He was attacked by the accused when he intervened in a scuffle between his nephew and the latter.

Inspector Randhir Singh, station house officer (SHO) at Basti Jodhewal police station, said the accused, Sham Pal of Tibba Road, under the influence of liquor, indulged in a scuffle for a minor issue with the victim’s nephew, who called his uncle for help.

When Rama Shankar reached the spot and intervened in the matter, Sham Pal hit his head with a log of wood, following which Shankar collapsed and died on the spot, the SHO added.

On being informed, the police reached the spot and arrested the accused, before booking him under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
