A newborn male baby was found abandoned in the maize fields of Rorian Bathia village, apparently by her mother on Monday. He was rescued and sent to the Nari Niketan in Jalandhar.

According to civil hospital child specialist Dr Gurmit Singh, the three-day old was a infant and was healthy.

As villagers heard an infant's cries, they rushed to the fields and to their surprise, found one abandoned. A woman named Babbu picked him up and wanted to take him home as she had four daughters.

However, the police arrived and took the new-born in their custody. He was taken to the civil hospital for medical check-up and nursing care.

Since the infant was healthy, the SDM ordered that he be shifted to the Nari Niketan.

Babbu pleaded with the civil and police administration for baby's adoption but the officers said that it could be done only by following the due legal procedure. Mehtiana station house officer Pritam Singh said that the police were trying to trace the mother.
