A tenth class student, Gaurav Verma, of Guru Nanak International Public School (GNIPS), BRS Nagar, Ludhiana has lodged a complaint against his Physical Training (PT) teacher, Harpal Singh, alleging that the teacher slapped him during the school assembly on the occasion of Independence Day, on Friday.

A complaint to this effect has been registered against Singh in Sarabha Nagar Police station, on Friday evening. Devendra Verma, father of Gaurav Verma informed HT that Gaurav's shoe had slipped from his foot during the morning assembly.

He claimed, Gaurav bent down to adjust the shoe, which infuriated the teacher. "Gaurav was adjusting his shoe while the assembly was going on and the PT teacher, Harpal Singh got angry, and slapped Gaurav six times. Gaurav has sustained an injury on his ear," Verma said.

Harpal Singh, however, refuted the allegation and said, "The National Anthem was being played during the morning assembly and Gaurav was laughing. I slapped him only once."

Bhupinder Bedi, principal of GNIPS, said, "Harpal Singh is a patriot and was offended when Gaurav did not stand straight and began adjusting his shoe. However, I must say, nothing happened intentionally and I hope the matter is solved peacefully."
